My Legendary GirlfriendWill Kelly has just arrived in London to start his teaching career at Wood Green Comprehensive. He has just rented out the bed-sit from hell and is in debt up to his eyeballs. All these problems pale into insignificance beside his emotional state He was dumped three years ago by Aggi, who was meant to be THE ONE. He thinks that he will never recover, but over the course of a weekend he falls in love with a girl he has never met, discovers his best friend has betrayed him, and helps another friend get even on her cheating husband, all the time on the phone. Simon's opinion: I found this to be a thoroughly unsatisfying book. Although many 'lad lit' books cover similar territory to this, My legendary Girlfriend felt like a novel by numbers where all the usual plotlines and characters appear in carefully measured amounts, in order to appeal to the widest possible audience. The constant whining and introspection of the main character Will Kelly drove me to distraction. As I had no empathy whatsoever with the main character I tended to tune out as he moaned away remorselessly and the attempts at humour completely passed me by. Other books By Mike Gayle: |
