Michele Vernal is a New Zealand based writer currently living in the small South Island town of Oxford in North Canterbury, New Zealand. She's thirty-six year old, and a married mum of two small boys.

She says The Brazilian Job is the working title of my first novel. A mix of chick-lit / yummy mummy, the Brazilian job is based on what I strive to be on a daily basis. However having recently been chased by a randy goat while out running not to mention leaving the house with a ‘Reduced to Clear’ sticker stuck to my trouser leg (courtesy of my four year old), my street cred is currently up for renewal. As for the chick-lit side of things well this is a genre of fiction I earned the qualification to write after having served on the front line of singledom for over half my twenties. I spent the remaining quarter working as a Legal Secretary both here and in Ireland while trying to get my, now, husband to put a ring on my finger.

Writing was always something I planned to get round to doing but work and socializing got in the way until all that stopped with the arrival of my first son. While he was having lovely long day sleeps I began to get on the computer and write. After attending several courses at Canterbury University I’ve gone on to have a dozen or so opinion style pieces published in various New Zealand parenting magazines. Of course these magazines require a certain amount of political correctness and that has been the joy of writing The Brazilian Job - the freedom to be a little bit un-PC. "

The Brazilian Job

This is the debut from New Zealand writer Michelle Vernal and, to reflect the way book publishing is moving, the first ebook that we've featured. Legal secretary Rebecca is in a job which seems to have little going for it except some good mates and the proximity of a very attractive boss. However, any attempts to move things on are thwarted when Rebecca answers a call for help from her perfect elder sister, Jennifer, and flies home to look after her niece and nephew for two weeks.

This is a story of the relationship between two sisters as much as anything else, and we found that a refreshing angle for chicklit. We won't give the game away too much but there's also a great mix of girlie humour, cringeworthy moments and, of course, romance.

Testimonials

"Chick-lit meets romance in Vernal's witty debut novel, The Brazilian Job. With each comical predicament, she had me laughing the whole way through"
Pamela Guerrieri, literary judge, ECPA, Christy Awards, RWA
